Marketing efficiency and its correlates among fish retailers in Oyo State: empirical evidence from Ibarapa area

Abstract
This study examined marketing efficiency and its correlates among fish retailers in Oyo State: empirical evidence from Ibarapa Area. Primary data were collected by administering 100 copies questionnaires. Respondents were taken from the seven towns comprising Ibarapa area as follows: Lanlate, Eruwa, Igboora, Idere, Ayete, Tapa and Igangan and the number of respondents from each town are 15, 17, 20, 11, 13, 09, and 15 respectively. The descriptive statistics result showed that majority of fish retailers were females with 94.0% while their male counterpart were 6.0%. Majority of the respondents were married with average net marketing margin between ₦330.36k and ₦2215.77k in Igangan and Ayete respectively. Exponential model was found to be the lead equation among the four models fitted. Age(X1), Gender(X2), Marketing experience(X3), Average fish price(X4), Transportation cost(X5), Duration of sales(X6) and Quantity of fish sold(X7) were found to be signed according to a priori expectation and were found to be significant at p=1. Some of the fish species commonly sold in Ibarapa are live Clarias gariepinus, frozen mormyrus spp. Scomberomerus spp. (frozen), Ethmalosa fimbriata (frozen) and the problems facing fish retailers in the area include lack of storage facilities, loss on investment.
